#1 bathroom repair company in Tallinn

Bathroom tiling | Vannitoaremont 24

Vannitoaremont 24 does tiling in Tallinn and Harju County in bathrooms, showers and toilets: tiling the floor and walls, installing large-format tiles and renewing old grout joints, always on top of waterproofing and in the full extent of the adhesive layer.

We always leave 5 millimetres of joint where the wall and floor meet, because this movement joint must allow two different structures to move without the rigid grout cracking at this point. By the end of 2025, 15,309 square metres of tiles had gone to the walls and floors under the hands of the tilers.

Bathroom tiling services

Tiling work in the bathrooms of apartment buildings and private houses consists of four jobs at Vannitoaremont 24: tiling the floor and walls, installing large-format tiles and renewing grout joints.

  • An installer lays large light-coloured floor tiles with tile spacers. The tiles are cut on site with an electric wet tile saw.

    Floor tiling

Tiling the floor begins with checking the sloped base and waterproofing, because the tile itself does not create a slope, but follows the shape of the surface below it exactly as it was built.

Vannitoaremont 24 always uses an acid-resistant grout in the villages of Viimsi and Saue, where the water comes from a well, because its dense surface does not absorb lime from the well water like a normal cement grout.

  • Floor tiles are laid to a laser line. Levelling clips keep large tile edges flush while the adhesive sets.

    Wall tiling

The tiling of the walls starts from the bottom row, under which the guide bar keeps the first row exactly level, and moves upwards row after row, the joint of each row in line with the previous one.

Before gluing the first row, Vannitoaremont 24 lays the tiles dry in a row on the wall, and the customer attaches the pattern and cut points directly on the wall, so the final result will not be a surprise on the glued tiles.

  • Large-format tiles are ordered only with rectified edges. By the end of 2025, 4,517 square metres had been laid.

    Installation of large-format tiles

Installation of a large-format, 60x60 centimeter or larger tile requires a adhesive comb with a 12-millimeter notch and the application of adhesive both on the floor and on the back of the tile, because ordinary one-sided gluing leaves empty spaces under the tile.

Vannitoaremont 24 taps every large tile after installation, and with a booming sound, immediately lifts the tile and repairs the adhesive layer before the adhesive hardens.

  • An installer lays dark floor tiles around a drain. The silicone joint is a wear item replaced after 5 years.

    Renewal of grout joints

Joint renewal removes old, cracked or moldy grout from a depth of 4 millimetres and replaces it with new moisture-resistant grout without removing the tiles.

Vannitoaremont 24 renews the grout joints in the bathroom, where the tile is intact and the joint is darkened, and joint renewal costs from 18 euros per square meter.

Tiling prices

There are two variables in the price per square meter of tiling: the format of the tile and the condition of the substrate. We do not charge for a site visit or a written quote.

ServicePrice
Tiling worksalates 35 € /m²
Installation of large-format tilesalates 58 € /m²
Joint renewalalates 18 € /m²
Wall-floor movement joint installationalates 8 € /jm

What affects the price:

  • tile format and layout pattern, horizontal, vertical or offset
  • evenness of the base and the condition of the waterproofing
  • the number of internal corners, cutouts and pipe penetrations
  • 30 percent of the tiled surface is paid at the start, 50 percent at the end of tiling and the remaining 20 percent at handover
  • outside the city limits, travel costs for each tiling day is 0.92 euros per kilometer driven from the city centre office

How long does tiling take?

Tiling the walls and floor of a 4-square-meter bathroom with a standard 30x30-centimeter tile takes 2 working days: the floor on the first day, the walls on the second, each followed by grouting.

With a large-format, 60x60 centimeter tile, the same 4 square metres will take 3 working days, because each tile needs adhesive on both sides, and the installation is also slowed down by the weight of the tile itself, which requires leaving distance wedges between the tiles at the right height.

For a 30x30 cm tile and smaller, a adhesive comb with a 6 mm notch is sufficient, which only applies the adhesive to one surface. On the larger tile, we comb the adhesive in addition to the back, and after installation, we tap on each tile: the humming sound means an empty place in the adhesive layer, which we repair before the adhesive hardens.

The joint gap at the meeting point between the floor and the wall remains 5 millimetres empty and is filled with a different, flexible sanitary silicone than the rigid joint compound, because this place moves over time due to different thermal expansion. The answer to the tiling request comes within the same working day, and tiling starts within 15 working days of the agreement, immediately after the waterproofing has completely dried. By the end of 2025, 58 bathrooms in new houses have been completed as separate tiling work with a membrane.

An installer spreads adhesive onto a wall tile with a notched trowel, with laser levels on the floor. By the end of 2025, tilers had mitred the edges of 211 shower niches at 45 degrees to avoid a metal corner trim.
A tiler in dark work clothes presses a large light grey floor tile into combed adhesive; tiles lean against the wall, with a red space heater in the corner and snow at the window. Large tiles are stored upright so a stack's weight cannot crack the lower ones.

Tiling a new bathroom near Saue Church with 60 × 60 cm tiles

Owner: Kärt V., newly built private house in Saue. Location: Near Saue Church, Saue. Job number: 1912.

Site visit. The surveyor measured the wall and floor area of the 4 square meter bathroom as 23.2 square metres and a 5 business day schedule was sent with the quote.

Waterproofing. The floor, the walls of the corner shower enclosure up to 2 metres high and the other walls up to 30 centimetres high got a two-layer membrane, and the floor drain got a water test before tiling.

Substrate inspection and gluing. In January, the bathroom was heated to 10 degrees before tiling, the tile packages were brought to the house from the unheated garage the day before, and the 60x60 tiles were laid dry on the wall before gluing for customer approval. The adhesive was combed with a 12 mm notch on both the substrate and the back of the board.

Grouting and handover. Each tile received a knock test, the wall joint is 2 millimetres and the floor joint is 3 millimetres, and a 5 millimeter movement joint was left between the wall and the floor with flexible sanitary silicone.

Repair price: €1,710.60 including VAT: waterproofing in two layers 9.2 m² × €13 = €119.60, installation of reinforcing strips in internal corners and grommets 1 room × €60 = €60, hermetic connection of the floor drain to the membrane 1 pc × €45 = €45, installation of large-format tiles 23.2 m² × €58 = €1345.60, installation of the wall-floor movement joint 7.2 jm × €8 = €57.60 and Saue's repair day driving cost 5 days × €16.56 = €82.80. Tiles, adhesive, grout and membrane material are added to the labor price.

Duration of repair: 5 working days in 2026, of which waterproofing with drying and water test 2 days and tiling and grouting 3 days.

Finished room: The 23.2 square meter 60x60 tiles in the bathroom are in place and none of the tiles rattled in the knock test.

How we work

From site visit to grouting in three steps.

  1. 1. Site visit and riser inspection

On the property, we measure the area of the walls and floor, count the internal corners and cutouts, and discuss the format and layout of the tile. The quote comes with a schedule where preparation of the substrate, tiling of the walls and floor, and grouting have their own working days. In a panel building, our surveyor also writes in the written quote the condition of the riser, which he can see from behind the open riser hatch.

  2. 2. Check and prime the substrate

Before tiling, we check that the waterproofing has completely dried and the surface is flat. We comb the adhesive with a notched adhesive comb corresponding to the tile size, on one surface of a standard tile, on both sides of a large-format tile.

  3. 3. Grouting and handover

After the adhesive hardens, we fill the grout joints with a moisture-proof joint compound and leave 5 millimetres of the wall-floor movement joint empty for the flexible silicone. The warranty document provides a 3-year warranty for waterproofing and tiling.

Choosing tile size and layout

The shape of the room, the number of corners and the flatness of the base determine whether a small or large-format tile is suitable.

Small tiles for rooms with many corners

In a small bathroom with many corners and pipe passages, a 20x20 cm tile is more practical because the cut remains smaller and each cut is cheaper than a large tile. The small tile is also suitable for round pipes and corners where it is difficult to fit the large tile exactly.

Large-format tiles with fewer grout lines

A large-format tile, starting from 60x60 centimetres, leaves fewer grout joints and creates a calmer overall impression, and needs a flat base, because even a 3-millimeter unevenness in the base is noticeable from the angle of a large tile. This type of tile is more difficult to lift with one person, and we always have two men install it at the same time.

Grout colour and joint width

The colour of the joint affects how much the joint stands out in the overall impression: the same tone as the tile makes the surface uniform, a contrasting tone highlights the pattern. 2 millimetres is suitable for the wall joint width, 3 millimetres for the floor joint, because on the floor the joint must bear more load under the feet than on the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Wide Should the Joint on the Wall and Floor Be?

2 millimetres is suitable for the wall joint width, 3 millimetres for the floor joint. On the floor, the joint must withstand more load and movement under the feet, therefore the floor joint is 1 millimeter wider than the wall joint.

Why is an empty joint left between the wall and the floor?

Between the wall and the floor there is 5 millimetres without a joint, filled with flexible sanitary silicone instead of a rigid joint compound. This movement joint allows two different structures to move without the joint splitting at that point.

What size notched trowel does a large tile need?

A large-format, 60x60 centimeter or larger tile requires a 12-millimeter notched adhesive comb and adhesive on both surfaces, the back of the tile, and the substrate. A 6 mm notch on one surface is sufficient for a normal, smaller tile.

How Long Does Tiling Take?

Tiling a 4 square meter bathroom with a standard tile takes 2 working days, with a large format tile 3 working days. The time difference comes from the fact that a large tile needs adhesive on both sides and more accurate levelling before installation.

How Much Does Tiling Cost Per Square Meter?

Tiling works cost from 35 euros per square meter, installation of large-format tiles from 58 euros per square meter. The cost of the tile, adhesive and grout will be added separately.

Can new tiles be laid over old tiles?

No. The new waterproofing is applied directly to the flat substrate, not to the uneven and open surface of the old tile, so we remove the old tiles before installing the new layer.

Can grout be renewed without replacing the tiles?

Yes, joint renewal removes the old grout from a depth of 4 millimetres and replaces it with new grout without removing the tiles. It is suitable for a bathroom where the tiles are in order and the joint is moldy or cracked. By the end of 2025, Vuuke has been renovated in 214 bathrooms in a total of 1,498 square metres.

In which regions do you do tiling?

Our tilers work to every district of Tallinn, from Lasnamäe and Mustamäe panel houses to Kalamaja and Kadriorg wooden houses, and in Harju County to Maardu, Viimsi, Saue, Keila and Rae parish.
